The quip Electric Toothbrush is part of the “direct to consumer” distribution model that is soooo very popular right now. The benefit to the end user is the product costs a bit less, so it can be a more affordable option than some of the big, brand name competitors.
quip has an interesting story (and yes, they don’t capitalize the “q”.) They feel that most of the data around electric toothbrushes is pure B.S. and nothing more than gimmicks.
The belief is the only reliable metric and benefit an electric toothbrush serves is a fancy timer to let you know how long to brush your teeth. As a result, they developed the quip Electric Toothbrush in order to bring a low cost offering to the masses – albeit through a recurring subscription model.
The quip Electric Toothbrush itself has gained a lot of attention (and financing) and has a nice, sleek design and feel to it. It has a well designed holder that attaches to the mirror or tile wall in the bathroom as well.
Given that the founder and designers of quip, Simon Enever and Bill May boast industrial design backgrounds this shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.
Enever worked at Fuseproject, which was responsible for the first bluetooth speaker, Jambox, and home lock system August. May worked for Lifetime Brands, which designs kitchen products for big consumer names, including the Farberware and KitchenAid lines.
Unfortunately, in our opinion, the highlights end there. quip is woefully under-powered compared to other products in the same category (See Goby, or our BURST Ambassador favorite – Burst). The battery isn’t rechargeable and they have to be replaced by hand at approximately 3 month intervals.
The motor has only one speed. The heads and bristles only come in only one shape and stiffness so the options are sparse.
